Nearly every school has one thing in common, bullies. These bullies run around picking on their classmates so that they can feel good about themselves. I did not get picked on much in school, but some of my classmates did. I am the oldest of my parent's three children, my sister being five years younger and my brother ten years younger than myself. My family all went to the same school. During my adolescent years, I let both my brother and sister know that if anyone picked on them, then they were to come get me so that I could defend them. They felt safe having their older brother in close proximity and knew I was simply a call away.
The same was true for Israel but on a much grander scale. Israel had many enemies and was involved in warfare often. When they would see their enemies they would, like most people, become frightened when realizing that they were outnumbered. However, even when they were outnumbered they still stood a good chance at winning the battle.
God was on Israel's side. No matter the number of people, the weapons, or the skills of the enemies, God was in control of the battles. God brought Israel out of Egypt, so how much more can He do? Much more! God can cause the weak to defeat the strong (David and Goliath). Deuteronomy 20 shows us that God grants Israel victories. We serve a great God! We always need to remember that He is in control and learn not to rely on ourselves.
