Today's Passage: Numbers 25-26

Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines worship as giving honor, respect, and devotion to someone or something. Using this definition, it is easy to see that the average person probably worships more than just God in a given day. Once you consider your personal thoughts and actions within a day, you may see that you honor many things other than God. These objects that you honor may be clothes, cars, money, or even people. In the passage for today, the Moabite women distracted the Israelites with sexual sins which soon led to all out worship of Baal.

God did not take this worship lightly. He told Moses that the sinful men who worshiped Baal must be put to death (25:5). A few men followed God's order and killed the sinful men and honored God. He (God) was very pleased with his servants following the orders to remove those who worshiped false gods. It is clear from this passage and earlier Old Testament passages that God takes sin very, very seriously!

The question for us is, "Do you take sin seriously?" Due to our culture, we have the opportunity to worship anything and everything, especially ourselves. If we proceed to worship anything other than our Creator, then we will pay the price. The price may not be death by spear (25:8), but it will be no walk in the park either. We have to make a daily decision to honor, respect, and be devoted to God. I pray that none of us become like the Israelites who turned from God and worshiped false gods because it made them feel good.
